TYPE II DIABETES
As lipids decline, so does albuminuria

SAN FRANCISCO-Hyperlipidemia control may retard kidney-disease progression among Type II diabetics.

A team at Clinica Medica in Sassari, Italy, treating 10 normotensive Type IIs with simvastatin for moderate hypercholesteremia saw significant decreases in urinary albumin excretion.

The mean excretion rate per 24 hours went from 73 mg to 42 mg after a year of treatment, Dr. Giancarlo Tonolo told the the American Diabetes Association meeting here.

Albumin changes paralleled those in LDL, though there was no linear correlation between them. Both total cholesterol and LDL fell during the year, then rose slightly again, along with albumin, six months after patients were crossed over to placebo.

Ten patients initially randomized to placebo had no lipid or albumin changes. -Judy Ismach
