SAN FRANCISCO-Women who say protein snacks ease morning-sickness symptoms better than carbohydrates may not be crackers.
A University of Michigan study found that 14 women with first-trimester pregnancies reported 35% less nausea after eating a controlled high-protein snack compared with meals with high carbohydrates or fats.
Stomach dysrhythmias also decreased by about a third with the protein meal only, Dr. Michelle Jednak told the American Gastroenterological Association meeting here.
A chocolate-flavored fortified drink and an egg-white omelet made up the protein meals, she says, Kool-Aid and gumdrops the carbohydrate meals, and a milkshake and cream cheese on crackers the fat meals. -Steve Stiles
