An invention by the mother of Jake
CHICAGO-Hammacher Schlemmer, the upscale gadget king, has awarded its 1996 grand prize for consumer inventions to a revolutionary medicine bottle for babies.
Lori Welsandt-Burchett and her husband, Mark Burchett, won $5,000 for the Rx MediBottle. They devised it to ensure that their 3½-month-old son, Jake, got the right dose of antibiotics for a respiratory disorder.
Jakes resistance to his medicine led the couple to a joint feeding bottle and syringe. The device, just taken to market, helps ensure accurate dosing because medicine goes straight from the syringe to the tip of the nipple. That gives taste buds less time to rebel. -Nneoma E. Njoku
