SEXUAL FUNCTION
Radiotherapy shines in prostate cancer

LOS ANGELES-Radiation seems to do well at preserving sexual function for younger men with prostate cancer.

In a study of 45 men at Fox Chase Cancer Center treated for all stages of clinically localized prostatic adenocarcinoma, 73% of 41 who were initially potent remained so, Dr. Gerald Hanks told the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology meeting here.

That compares with an 85% potency rate for 47 age-matched controls (mean age 60) without prostate cancer. Men impotent after radiation maintained high sexual interest and were good rehab candidates. The groups were equal in desire, enjoyment, and importance of sex.

Sexual function after nerve-sparing prostatectomy is kept in 50% to 70% of patients, but drops under 10% for standard prostatectomy.
