CESAREANS
Scars traced to abnormal bleeding

CHICAGO-Add previous cesarean to the list of causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding.

When 310 women with abnormal bleeding were examined with sonohysterography, nine showed a gap in the uterine muscle between the uterus and the cervix, says Dr. Amy Thurmond of Meridian Park Medical Center in Portland, Ore. They were “right where you would expect a scar from a cesarean delivery to be”.

In all nine, the bleeding was traced to one or more cesareans. Two had had one and three a pair. Three reported three, and one four.

The scars in the anterior lower segment of the myometrium were 8 to 17 mm in diameter, Dr. Thurmond told the Radiological Society of North America meeting here.

All nine women were premenopausal and had a typical bleeding pattern-two to 10 days of spotting after menstruation. -Jean McCann
