Debating the mind-body conundrum
WASHINGTON-An ad campaign featuring a pediatrician as a role model has miffed some fashion models.
Dr. Nicole Lang is “a doctor today because her role models weren’t models,” says the ad run by the Women’s College Coalition, representing 82 schools.
Fresh out of residency at Emory, Dr. Lang says her parents and grandmother, who were passionate about education, inspired her.
She says the ad’s purpose isn’t to denigrate modeling, but to encourage a diversity in careers by women in underrepresented professions. Esthar Young, a New York model, says her profession, like medicine, is socially redeeming and lucrative. -Thomas Novembre
