LOW-TECH IVF
Office-based procedure deters broods

LOS ANGELES-A new assisted-reproduction method claims to be singleton-friendly.

FASIAR (follicle aspiration, sperm injection, assisted rupture) is a simple office-based procedure, cheaper than high-tech IVF, that’s been used to achieve singleton pregnancies for eight patients, says a USC ob-gyn team here. The procedure takes about 15 minutes, with mild discomfort.

FASIAR patients take human menopausal gonadotropin to stimulate ovulation, Dr. Richard Paulson reported in Fertility and Sterility. Then, under ultrasound guidance, an egg-containing follicle is punctured with an 18-gauge needle and the contents are removed with a syringe containing motile sperm. The follicular fluid-oocyte-sperm mixture is then injected into the peritoneal cavity. Excess eggs are aspirated to avoid multiple pregnancy.
