Isolated deformity may have company
BOSTON-An isolated clubfoot seen in utero may merit a closer look.
In a review of 68 fetuses with isolated clubfoot that Harvard sonographers found over nine years, 34 karyotypes showed four with aneuploidy, a rate of at least 5.9% (11.8% in the karyotyped group).
Nine of the 60 fetuses found to have clubfoot after birth had hip or limb abnormalities that had evaded detection, Dr. Thomas Shipp told the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine meeting here.
The four with genetic abnormalities had 47,XXY, 47,XXX, trisomy 18, and trisomy 21, says Dr. Shipp. -Anne S. Harding
