Comparing Glottic Cancer Approaches
     Among patients with T1a midcord glottic carcinoma, endoscopic laser surgery appears to result in overall voice quality that is equivalent to that of radiotherapy, according to a European report. The study, published in the September 2008 Archives of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, noted that specific voice profiles may ultimately be different for the two modalities. [ More ]
Fewer ED Visits in ICD Patients
     An international study suggests that adjunctive azimilide significantly reduces the number of ED visits and hospitalizations in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) at high risk of arrhythmias. Researchers found that 38.3% of placebo recipients had at least one arrhythmic-related ED visit or hospitalization compared with a 21.8% rate for patients assigned to 75 mg of azimilide and a 27.6% rate for patients assigned to a 125 mg dose of azimilide. Racial Disparity & Hepatectomy
     In-hospital mortality after major hepatectomy appears to vary by race, according to a study published in the September 2008 Journal of the American College for Surgeons. Investigators found that African-American patients had a two-fold higher risk of surgical mortality than Caucasian patients. The analysis suggested that clinical factors, insurance status, and hospital factors did not account for these differences. [ More ]
